In an effort to share resources and offer more services, two Ventura County charter schools will join this year to provide a home-school program for local families.

The Ventura Charter School of Arts and Global Education and the BRIDGES Charter School in Thousand Oaks plan to share staff and resources for a program that will include enrichment classes and online services.

“We were looking for ways to expand our independent study program,” said Lisa Hildebrand, education director for the Ventura charter school that opened in 2006. The collaboration “seemed like a great way to do that.”

As a small, independent campus, the Ventura school has previously hooked up with other charters on efforts such as grant writing. This is the first time, however, that school officials are partnering with another local charter group, Hildebrand said.

BRIDGES and the Ventura charter share similar educational philosophies focused on “whole child” development, intrinsic motivation and parental involvement. “It’s unique in that our programs are so similar,” Hildebrand said.
