Director's Note, September 16th: Spirit Day, Climate Walk-Out, Math Curriculum Updates, and more!

Spirit Day Assembly
Our middle school Student Senate is leading our first whole-school assembly around our monthly theme, Peace.

Student Senators are visiting K-5th grade classes to lead discussions about Peace and will be giving each class a Peace Flag to display in their classrooms. Students will be viewing “Kids for Peace” with their teachers:

These activities will culminate in a whole school assembly on Thursday, September 26th at 8:30am.

Student Organized Climate Walk-Out
Some Bridges students and parents are planning to join the Global Climate Walk-Out this Friday, September 20th. They will be organizing a peaceful protest in support of greater global awareness and action related to climate change. If you wish to participate, you can connect with our student senate through Mr. Jason: or parent representative, Sarah Nicholason:

Math Committee Updates
Our math committee has continued to move toward our objective of becoming area leaders in math instruction by moving away from textbook driven instruction and closer to providing more opportunities for our students with meaningful, real-world math. All of our K-5 teachers are implementing Number talks, Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), Math Journals, and Counting Collections.  This school year, five Bridges teachers will also be traveling to the UCLA lab school to engage in professional development related to counting collections and CGI with in order to bring back ideas for deeper implementation. We are very excited about the direction we are heading and the experiences with math that we will be providing Bridges students!

School Safety Drills
Last Friday, we hosted our first lockdown drill of the year. The drill went smoothly and we identified several areas to improve in future lockdown drills. We work closely with our school resource officers to identify strategies for improving our procedures, and we are grateful to our students, parents, and staff for participating in these important drills.

Please note that should we ever be in a real hard lock-down scenario, parents should meet emergency officials in Gelson’s parking lot for updates and communication rather than come directly to the school. Driving to the school will slow response time. Should we ever be in a lockdown, we also ask that you withhold calling the school; all communication from the school will come through Parentsquare Alerts on your cell phones.

Upcoming Performing Arts Opportunities
Our Parent led Performing Arts PMC is gearing up for another great year! The two major events that they coordinate are the School Musical and the “Bridges Got Talent” Show. The “Bridges Got Talent” auditions will be held after school Wednesday and Thursday, September 18th and 19th, and the information meeting for the school musical (open to students in grades 3-8) will be Wednesday, September 25th at 3pm with auditions taking place in early November. For more information, you can contact our Performing Arts PMC lead, Deb at
