Director's Note, February 5th: Middle School Science Fair Recap, Coffee Chat, New Parent Driver Field Trip Requirements, and More!

6th Graders for a Day and Middle School PIN (Thursday, February 8th, 6:30pm)
As is tradition, today our 5th grade students will be spending some time shadowing our 6th graders, playing community building games, and meeting all of our Middle School teachers this week.

If you have a child entering 6th grade next year, please also attend our Middle School PIN on Thursday, February 8th at 6:30 pm. You'll have the opportunity to mingle with our teachers, learn more about our middle school, and ask any questions you may have.

Middle School Science Fair -- Success!
Our Middle School Students showed off all their hard work at our Science Fair on Friday. If you weren't able to attend, you missed out! I had the opportunity to judge some of the projects, and I was amazed by the scientific process that each of our students went through to answer their essential questions. What struck me as most impressive was the process-based approach to learning that they each went through -- all of the students were able to say why their project was meaningful for our world, and what they would do next if they were to do the project again. A big thank you and congratulations to Mr. John, our Science Teacher, for encouraging this growth mind set in our students, and a big bravo to all of the students who participated. Your hard work paid off! Thank you too to all those who gave up a morning of work to participate in the judging.

I look forward to seeing many of these projects move on to our county science fair!

Coffee Chat TOMORROW with Kelly and Cindy at 8:30am
We are hosting our next Coffee Chat for parents tomorrow, February 6th. This is the perfect time to provide us with feedback and ideas that you have to make Bridges Charter School even better! The coffee chat starts at 8:30am and we will wrap up around 9:30/10am. Tomorrow we will share some information about our annual programmatic audit, discuss new strategies for math teaching and learning, and take a look at progress toward some of our goals. Your input is hugely important to our progress forward, and we hope you will be able to join us!

New Field Trip Requirements for Parent Drivers
Our students are lucky that we prioritize field trips as a part of their learning experience. We are also very fortunate to have so many parents willing to participate in the field trips and drive students when necessary.

We have received more information from our insurance company that requires us to have more information on file for parent drivers. In addition to the livescan fingerprints, proof of insurance, and the signed waiver, we now will also need a copy of your DMV record which can be obtained from the DMV website for $2. We will require this once a year and will need this on file if you are participating in the school sponsored field trip in any way.  We also will require proof of insurance for all parents driving to field trips even if you are not transporting children.

We know requiring these extra documents is burdensome for you and the teachers, but it is vital that we stay in compliance in order to protect our school, and it is even more important for us to take all the preventative measures that we can to ensure that students are safe when traveling off school grounds.

You can expect to receive more information from your child's teacher soon.

Handball during Recess: Please leave your Handballs at home!
Handball is a popular game during recess for many of our students. Student are very excited about playing it and often enter into intense games with each other. It is the perfect setting to learn conflict resolution! Please note that students should not be bringing any toys or handballs to school. Toys brought to school should remain in their backpacks. We have plenty of handballs at school to be used and shared by all children, and our yard duty supervisors will order more handballs as necessary.

Mindfulness Fridays, Starting February 23rd
Do you ever feel frazzled and can't figure out how to slow things down? Does stress make you feel irritable or keep you up at night? Does it seem that you have a life full of good things that you are too busy to appreciate?

This parent education series on mindful awareness will explain how practicing any of several techniques can quickly increase your attentional skills, leading to increased fulfillment, better resilience with stress, and greater concentration. One of the most exciting and innovative things about the system we will be exploring is its emphasis on "practice in life." This means that you will learn how you can cultivate mindfulness at any time throughout your day - whether you are at work, on a field trip, or exercising.

Each week, participants will receive instruction in and have the opportunity to practice specific techniques of the Unified Mindfulness System, created by Shinzen Young, internationally known mindfulness teacher and author. In addition to instruction and practice, we will also have time for Q&A during each class. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member with you! Just be sure to sign up for your guests as well, and show them how to check in with LobbyGuard when they arrive on campus.

You can RSVP on parentsquare here:
